Sunday Dinner

A perfect late summer meal: Grilled Sea Scallops with Corn Salad. We've been enjoying this recipe for about 7 years.

This time of year, it's my humble opinion that every day there should be a meal with some pairing/combination of corn, tomatoes, basil, and blueberries. This one fits that criteria nicely. Better yet, the corn is very local, and the orange and red cherry tomatoes are from the abundant garden of a dear coworker.

We had a 2007 Left Foot Charley Riesling to go with it, but we sort of got it backwards. While that was dry and nice (yes, a Riesling, Ellen :)), what would have gone better was the dryer second bottle we opened. Of all things, a bottle from Costco with the Kirkland Signature brand on the label, a Ti Point Sauvignon Blanc. We've been really tickled by these crazy citrus-rind New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs this summer. We took a sip and my brain was madly flipping through taste labels. Asparagus? No. Green grass? No, not quite. Then it clicked: crushed tomato leaves. Nothing about crushed tomato leaves in tasters' notes ('sweaty armpits'???) in the link, but that's what my limited palate came up with.

Luckily it's easy to get. And we should try it with a very tomato-y Italian Bread Salad before summer is over.

IS THERE NO OTHER WINE BUT RIESLING; GRARGH?!

Really, remind me, next time you're here, I need to introduce you to a little bigger variety. I'm betting you'd love a Silvaner, a Bacchus, a Weissburgunder or a Mueller-Thurgau.

But, mmh, tasty looking food. And, AND! Believe it or not, I'd even try the scallops by now. (What are you doing under the table, looking all pale and shaky?)

I'm sure we would love all those. We actually rarely drink Rieslings (Tim swears!). That just happened to be a fluky one we tasted up north and liked.

I have a hard time believing you would not have even liked the scallops a little bit. Sweet caramelized morsels....mmmmmm.....
