7/26/06

Wednesday, we split up to do our own thing. Ann and Elise went off to visit an old Michigan Tech friend, Scott and the boys went to the mineral museum at Michigan Tech and to visit his old fraternity house (Evan: 'Aunt Kathy, we saw a LOT of beer bottles all over!'), and Tim and I did some exploring of Houghton/Hancock. We checked out the big breakwater on the south end of the campground, and then drove to town for a long walk along the portage. A visit to the Library, a popular student bar for a beer or two, and some Lake Superior sushi (made with smoked whitefish), and then it was time to meet up with everyone else.

The Ranger III, coming back from Isle Royale and passing under the lift bridge between the towns of Houghton and Hancock. That's one cruise Tim and I would like to take.

Sharp-eyed Evan spotted a bald eagle soaring over the town. These days you can see a lot more of these birds since they've made their comeback, but it's still a thrill to see one in Michigan.

We visited Keweenaw Brewing Company for yet another beer (cream sodas for the boys) and then met up with Ann and Elise and her friend Maureen's family at the Ambassador Bar for pizza, another fondly remembered student hangout for Scott and Ann. No campsite cooking for anyone that night.

For 'dessert', it was pickled eggs at the B&B bar. Scott says that place hasn't changed one bit in the 20 or so years since he's been a student (see his post). I don't know how much business this bar does on a normal Wednesday night, but it probably doesn't see too many 40-something moms doing the Alligator on the floor, or 5 children learning how to play pool.
