Smoke And Mirrors
This organization decided to buy the Outreach portion of our hospital's laboratory services last year. The sale was final on December 28th.
Yesterday, they decided to 'decline'.
This sale has been the cause of all the strife, uncertainty, churning rumor-mills, stress, layoffs and hour cuts for laboratory employees for nearly a year.
Now they 'decline', after more than a month; after phlebotomists have been laid off, a drawing station has already been closed, and techs have been out quietly job-hunting elsewhere, or rethinking their lives, and the local community and physicians have already been upset by this whole deal.
We don't know why. We don't know what's going to happen. Everything right now is 'frozen' in place until all the suits can work this out. They treated us to an emergency town-hall meeting in the lab early this morning to update us on the news (which we'd already heard through various rumor mills). Work had to continue while this was going on, including myself and another tech investigating the innards of my favorite lab instrument, the DxC because it decided to have a shuttle loader jam in the middle of morning run.
Business as usual, I guess.

And, what now?
Let me clarify: The hospital decided to sell Outreach (the part of the lab that does all the doctors' office/outpatient lab work) for quick cash last year. Quest decided to buy it. Now they don't want it. My job is not in jeopardy (at least last I heard). Most of us are just trying to do our job in the middle of this whole Dilbert 3-ring circus. Stay tuned. But I imagine things will continue much the same for the foreseeable future.
So Quest bought it and now doesn't want it so they want the hospital to buy it back???? Errrr, something's not kosher here; there's more to this than you are being told -- 'course we are just mushroom lab techs. Keep us in the dark, feed us bull doo daily and we just keep right on going like the Energizer Bunny.
You betcha. The VP over ambulatory services got stripped of those responsibilities. In corporate doublespeak in a memo, it was said this job was too much for one person. What the rumor mill/interpretation said was that he has pissed off a lot of doctors, sits on the board of Health Plus, and there's been a conflict of interest. All Health Plus stuff goes to Quest. A lot of docs around here don't want their stuff going to Quest and are sending their accounts to the other hospitals in the area: what they purchased is losing value faster than a sieve each passing day. And then we heard this big contract was never signed anyway. WTF?? We all agree there's something fishy in Denmark, all right.
Okay...for the next installment! A few days have passed, and now, miracle of all miracles; we are going to continue Outreach!! Hooray ! Oh, by the way. We will not be hiring any more help, or adding equipment or supplies...but, we get to do more work with less people...Hooray??? Fishy in Denmark, you say?? Put it this way...the Danes are totally "floundering"!!!
