Apfelkuchen nach Grossmutter-art

In the last 48 hours, this is just one of the items Ellen and I have cooked. Pumpkin soup, salmon with compound herb butter, salmon with smoked paprika, apple crisp, rosemary roasted red potatoes, grilled corn on the cob...

Current music: Madeleine Peyroux 'Careless Love' album

I need more explanation of this apfelkuchen... to me, this photo almost appears to show what looks like toasted coconut, with sliced black olives?

Ellen called this a kuchen, but it seems more like a tart or crostada. The pastry is biscuit-like, and her recipe calls for the apples to be shredded. We did them on my box grater. Those are raisins mixed in there. Very delish, especially with a small scoop of butter pecan ice cream.
