Emergency Surgery

Not on one of us, luckily. On the house:

Last Thursday, Tim had noticed some moisture under the kitchen cabinets in the corner when he was washing/sealing the floor. Where the heck was this coming from? It was way too much to be from washing the slate. I saw it the night I got home, and thought, hmmmmmm. A phone call to Karl brought him out here at 7pm last night (after he'd already put in a full day's work) to investigate the problem. An educated guess on his part resulted in the removal of an upper cabinet and some careful drywall removal to reveal a punctured water pipe. Apparently when the pine paneling was being put up, a nail had driven straight through the hot water side of the kitchen plumbing. He verbally beat himself up for even allowing this to happen in the first place. But we agreed it was a very lucky thing that he had installed an access hole to the water shut-off valves in the ceiling (just in case...although we had never envisioned we'd be needing it this soon!), and that we'd caught this in time before some real damage took place. As it is there is some wet wood and drywall near the floor and some specks of mold already starting near the leak.

So I spent an entertaining evening watching (and at times assisting) in an emergency plumbing repair from the comfort of a bar stool, glass of Amarone della Valpolicella in hand. How can a girl possibly resist when her favorite contractor/plumber says 'Are you going to keep me company?' and 'So tell me all about your trip.' Then as he's leaving, he thanks me for 'having him over'. The boy's not right. When a Saturday evening plumbing repair in a customer's home is a social occasion... *Rolls eyes and shakes head* Dr. Karl is going to check on the 'patient' today, and for several days after to make sure things are drying properly and there's nothing else wrong.

In the meantime, today we've been invited to partake in Tim's brother's season tickets to the Redwings. We will actually get to attend a play-off game on home ice this afternoon. Go Wings!!!!!

Glad the kitchen's ok and glad you had a successful trip. Sounds like a great break from the grind.

Sometimes connections are good to have. And yes, the break from the usual grind has been great. Only I'm sorry I've been woefully behind with keeping up with your blogs.
